Alex Bentley A pearl is a hard, glistening object formed by a living shelled mollusk or another species, such as fossil conulariids, inside the soft tissue (specifically the mantle). Like a mollusk shell, a pearl consists of a minute crystalline form of calcium carbonate (mainly aragonite or a combination of aragonite and calcite) that has been deposited in condensed layers. The ideal pearl is perfectly round and smooth, but it is possible to create several other types, such as baroque pearls.
